"Uphill (American Dream)" originally appeared on my out-of-print Campfire CD. This is a song I wrote while I was teaching public school in Chicago. A lot of my students' families were first generation immigrants from Mexico.
I also recorded a version of this song for the Border Songs CD Project that I produced with my friend Robert Neustadt. Border Songs raises money for a humanitarian organization in Arizona called No More Deaths/No Más Muertes. The CD included tracks by an all-star cast of artists including Pete Seeger, Amos Lee, and Michael Franti. So far, mostly through Robert Neustadt's efforts, the CD has raised more than $60,000 to provide humanitarian aid along the border.
David Hedberg once again provided the video work. He had a little trouble with his new camera, and so the video has some glitches. John Neff also did the audio recording and production on this. Happily, my little Juan Estruch guitar from the 1960s sounds great. This is a guitar I got in trade for my Simon & Patrick Woodland Pro Folk guitar, and the guy I traded with has also become my guitar student!
